The visible spectrum of light is divided into colors. They can be distinguished from the others because they are composed of light waves of a given length. Colors consisting of only one wavelength are called "pure" colors and the degree of purity is called "saturation" or "chroma". The colors of the visible spectrum are violet, blue, green, yellow, orange, and red. Some colors we can see are not contained in the visible spectrum; they are created by mixing two or more different wavelengths.
The light designer has to possibilites to mix colors:
Color has a major impact on our feelings which are very personal and rooted in our own experience or culture. Different cultures often interpret colors in very different ways. For example, in Western cultures white is interpreted as a sign of purity and innocence, whereas in Eastern cultures it is a sign of mourning. Therefore, when using color, one has to consider the culture of the audience and be very careful. For the purpose of this website, I will give a few examples of how colors are experienced and interpreted in Western cultures;
