"Oftentimes the quality of the light tells the story: the time of day, the weather, whether sun is streaming through the window.
It can also help you appreciate what the actor is feeling, what the playwright wants you to feel." (Jules Fischer)

Light can not only be used to reinforce the story but also to reinforce the costumes or the set. For example, if it is a love story and the lighting in a romantic scene is blue or green, the scene/story is not supported by the lighting. To correctly use lighting to reinforce a theme or the story, an designers needs to be familiar with the four qualities of light.
In the example below, a primitive tribe gets up in the morning. Lighting supports this by creating a sunrise with warm light in the back.
