The intensity of light describes the amount of light reflected by the performer and the background. In other words, it decribes how bright or dim the light is.
Intensity depends basically on the number of lamps used and their wattages. However, another important aspect is the reflective quality of the make-up, costumens, and set. The light designer can increase or decrease intensity in a number of ways:
The intensity of the light can create different moods: The more intense the light/atmosphere is, the more excitement and emotions are found in a scene. This is also possible the other way around. The less intense the lights are, the less excitement can be found in the atmosphere.

- the number or types of lamps focused on the same object or area of the stage,
- the distance of the lamps from what is being illuminated,
- the amount of electricity reaching the lamp by using dimmers to brighten or dim the lights,
- the use of color filters.
