"Ultimately, the lighting designer must be an artist!
He must understand style, composition, balance, esthetics and human emotions.
He must also understand the science of light, optics, vision, the psychology of perception and lighting technology.
Using these tools the lighting designer must learn to think, feel and create with his heart." (Bill Williams)

The light designer manipulates the qualities (properties) of light in order to reach his goals in regard to the functions of stage lighting. For most of the goals, there is more than one quality of light he can manipulate. In the following, I will show how the functions of stage lighting are related to the qualities of light:
- Visibility is determined by intensity, color, movement and direction (distribution) of light.
- Revelation of form is determined by direction (distribution) of light.
- Creating the mood is determined by intensity, color, movement, direction and distribution in general.
- Supporting the Story is determined by intensity, color, direction (distribution) and movement.
- Composition is the end product of the lighting design. It is actually more influenced by the other functions of lighting than by the qualities of light.
